With an increasingly uncertain water future in many parts of the world due to the pressures of climate change, population growth and economic development, many large multinational corporates are recognising the physical, reputational, regulatory and financial risks they face in their operations and supply chains. Water security has been identified as a greater risk than soaring food prices, exhaustion of energy resources and climate change for the 21st Century.
Global corporate forums such as the World Economic Forum and UN CEO Water Mandate (under the auspices of the UN Corporate Compact) are actively engaging the implications of increasing water stress within the paradigm of shared risk between private sector, government and civil society. A range of initiatives are being explored around the world, from water footprint estimation, through water-related risk assessment and standards for good corporate water stewardship, to engagement with public policy processes at local and catchment scales.
Pegasys has been actively involved in framing these approaches globally and supporting particular companies to understand their risks and possible responses. Pegasys has expertise to support corporates, together with the public sector and civil society in identifying areas of risk around water, exploring opportunities for shared interests and ultimately facilitating engagement between parties to mitigate these risks. This is all built on the understanding gained from water footprint assessment of a company’s operations and supply chain, or alternatively a catchment level.
